What Makes the Piano Company Different?

The Piano Company Logo

The Piano Company has been a family-owned business for more than 30 years.  Without expensive TV/radio spots or expensive display ads in the Washington Post. The Piano Company was built up from its humble origins to become the choice of literally thousands of faithful customers as well as music teachers, churches, schools, and more.

The Piano Company has sent many pianos to such faraway countries as Brazil, Sierra Leone, Egypt, and Peru. In fact, when being visiting one of The Piano Company’s beautiful showrooms, foreigners and US  citizens alike frequently remark that they’ve never before seen so many beautiful pianos in a single showroom.

The Piano Company’s happy customers, teachers, technicians, and musicians enjoy learning about those manufacturers which are eager to have their products represented here because they know of The Piano Company’s reputation for honesty, integrity, and service.

To understand the underlying philosophy that sets The Piano Company apart, let’s take a brief look at how it all started …

Steve Cunningham learned to tune pianos while in high school and college in Tennessee. He then proceeded to ‘tune’ his way through The University of Tennessee and graduated in 1976 with a degree in Music Education. He moved to Loudoun County in 1976 and served as band director at Blue Ridge Middle School, then Broad Run High School, where he had a talent for inspiring and bringing out the best in his students.

Mr. Cunningham continued to service pianos on a part-time basis for the Loudoun County school system and for numerous private clients and churches, later opening a full-time restoration and piano service business. In 1985, he opened a small retail store on Market Street in Leesburg, delivering his first piano using a horse trailer!

Later, Steve served as President of the Northern Virginia Piano Technicians Guild. Through his desire to improve standards within the piano industry, piano manufacturers began to seek him out to represent their brands. Today, after the company has matured and after more than three decades, The Piano Company’s beautiful, 8,000 square foot showroom resides virtually next door to where Steve had the foresight to place his first showroom.

The Piano Company has been a KAWAI dealer ever since 1988, having, for the past many years,  won the coveted title of KAWAI INNER CIRCLE DEALER, and since KAWAI takes great pride in producing high-quality instruments  (worldwide) all management and sales staff at The Plano Company have attended KAWAl’s California-based, annually-offered, educational seminars.

Now, Mr. Cunningham travels across the U.S., his technical expertise being in demand from coast-to-coast.

In 1998, Mr. Robert Purdon joined The Plano Company, serving as General Manager & Vice President. Today, Mr. Robert Purdon and his wife, Antoinette, manage the Company’s two locations. They’ve traveled to manufacturing plants across several continents, gathering first-hand knowledge of ‘what is real’ in today’s piano offerings.
