About Us

The Piano Company has been a family owned business for more than 30 years.

Our History

The Piano Company was built up from its humble origins to become the choice of thousands of faithful customers, music teachers, churches, schools, and more. For 30 years we’ve sent pianos around the world to Brazil, Sierra Leone, Egypt, and Peru, and by visiting one of our showroom locals and visitors alike marvel at the many beautiful pianos we carry.

Our happy customers, teachers, technicians, and musicians enjoy learning about the manufacturers eager to have their product represented by us. Why? Because they know of The Piano Company’s reputation for honesty, integrity, and service.

To understand the underlying philosophy that sets The Piano Company apart, let’s take a brief look at how it all started…

May 1976

It started with a ‘tune’

Steve Cunningham learned to tune pianos while in high school and college in Tennessee. He then proceeded to ‘tune’ his way through The University of Tennessee and graduated in 1976 with a degree in Music Education.

He moved to Loudoun County in 1976 and served as band director at Blue Ridge Middle School, then Broad Run High Schoool, where he had a talent inspiring and bringing out the best in his students.

June 1985

A piano delivery fit for a king

Mr. Cunningham continued to service pianos on a part-time basis for the Loudon County school system and for numerous private clients and churches, later opening a full-time restoration and piano service business. In 1985, he opened a small retail store on Market Street in Leesburg, Virginia, delivering his first piano using a horse trailer!

January 1988

The Piano Company becomes a “KAWAI INNER CIRCLE DEALER”

The Piano Piano Company has been a KAWAI dealer ever since 1988 and has won for many years the coveted title of KAWAI INNER CIRCLE DEALER. Since KAWAI takes great pride in producing high-quality instruments (globally) all management and sales staff at The Piano Company have attended KAWAI’s California-based, annually-offered, educational seminars.

February 1998

Expanding in size and virtuosity

Later, Steve served as President of the Northern Virginia Piano Technicians Guild. Through his desire to improve the standards piano industry, piano manufacturers began to seek him out to represent their brands. Today, after the company has matured and after over 3 decades, The Piano Company’s beautiful, 8,000 square foot showroom resides virtually net door to where Steve had the foresight to place his first showroom.

In 1998, Mr. Robert Purdon joined The Piano Company, serving as General Manager & Vice President.
